Retail Supply Chain & Hot Dogs: The Perfect Logistics Analogy

Is there anything more American than spending a summer day at the ballpark watching baseball and eating a perfectly crafted Chicago style hot dog? This question conjures up an array of delightful memories for most, but one thought that undoubtedly never transpires is, “How was this hot dog made?”  If you are like most, you don’t care about all of the details of how the hot dog is made, but you do care that it tastes great.  The same core philosophy holds true with retail logistics.  Everyone expects product to be in the right place at the right time, and they are not as concerned about what it takes to get it there.

Like a Chicago style hot dog, the retail supply chain is more complex than many realize.  One single item passes through numerous hands and processes before being placed inside a retail store or on a consumer’s doorstep.  Manufacturers, merchandisers, vendors, distributors, and carriers all play a vital role in ensuring the timely and accurate delivery to the retail establishment.  While this relationship sounds simplistic, it is indeed quite complex as there are many factors that contribute to the ultimate goal of timely and accurate delivery.

Vendor Compliance – It is important that each leg of the supply chain understands the expectations of the retail establishment. Educating each and every partner on the requirements of the retailer is central to the success of the supply chain. When problems arise, there should be a formal process in place to document and adjust, so the same issues do not occur in the future.  Similarly, a true Chicago dog needs a natural-casing hot dog, preferably made by the Vienna Beef Company (this type of dog is very hard to find even in Chicago).  However, when a Chicago dog is ordered by the consumer, they expect every tantalizing bite to be unforgettable, and it is this natural-casing dog that provides the special “snap” in every bite. 

Training – Comprehensive personnel training is essential to all successful supply chain models.  Training on the nuances of each retailer is crucial to the long-term health of the supply chain relationship.  Understanding the requirements of each retailer (Walmart, Target, Macy’s, etc.) allows employees to become subject matter experts, delivering value to their customers by preventing issues before they snowball.   By removing the pressure of remembering the minutia of each retailer, you can free your customer up to concentrate on the activities that drive their business (They will LOVE you for this!).  Likewise, when you take a bite into the Chicago style hot dog, you can be confident that it was created by an artist that is skilled and trained at preparing it exactly the way you want.

Adapting to Change - In the words of Charles Darwin, "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."  Darwin’s quote is highly relevant and should be the mantra of the ever-evolving logistic industry. Evolving processes, technological advancements, and employee turnover are a few examples of changes that are constant within the supply chain. Organizations that adapt and leverage these changes are the partners that will succeed inside the retail supply chain.

A Chicago style hot dog is more than just a hot dog; it is a taste sensation with the perfect blend of toppings.  With so many toppings (bun, dog, relish, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mustard, & peppers), it threatens to fall apart with every bite.  The retail supply chain also has so many intricate layers that it sometimes may threaten to break down, but it is the partners who understand their role in the entire picture of the supply chain that keep the process working.  The art of the Chicago dog is in the details of every ingredient being perfect. Likewise, the success of the supply chain depends on every partner knowing their role and carrying it out to perfection.
